Resumen

Visitors have been essentially ignored as a subject of the history of museums, with barely any attention paid to their makeup or how their experiences evolved. That disinterest is particularly acute as regards the early history of the modern museums founded in the wake of the French Revolution. In Spain, the opening of the first public museums in Madrid in the early nineteenth century was characterised by the publication of guides and catalogues. The purpose, to educate the public at large and popularise and foster a general interest in science and the fine arts, is attested to by the earliest literature describing the collections on display at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando and the Real Museo de Pinturas del Prado
