Abstract

The doctoral thesis presented here examines the treatment given to prehistory content within the Spanish Compulsory Secondary Education through twelve textbooks in both Spanish and English aligned with the Education Act (LOE), belonging to different publishing groups and in use during the 2015/2016 academic year in the Autonomous Community of Madrid. The place that prehistory content and its teaching methods have occupied in secondary education is not a new issue: it has been a subject of study and concern for over three decades, both among teachers and specialists in prehistory and archaeology. However, despite the relevance of teaching prehistory in students' historical education, its role within formal education remains, even in recent years, limited and outdated in many aspects. This reality seems unchanged despite increasingly frequent educational reforms
