Abstract
The purpose of this article is to link the reasons for the poor theoretical and methodological foundation of social work with the thesis of (de)professionalization. In it, an analysis is made of the discomfort felt by social workers in their professional work, which affect their identity and their social recognition. In the first part of the article, a conceptual framework is presented on the professions system, the thesis of de-professionalization and the risks that affect social work in Spain. In the second part the discourses are presented in relation to the object of this article (a) weak knowledge monopoly, (b) the necessary feedback of the practice, (c) professional social work with academic social work and (d) social work in relationship to other professions. The methodology used has been discourse analysis to fifty in-depth interviews with experts in social work. It is concluded that self-reflection, training and deep knowledge of the paradoxes of social work are key elements to turn risks into potential.
