Abstract

This research addresses the genesis of Felix Vega’s graphic novel Juan Buscamares (1996-2003) and keeps track of some of his creative features. The work, originally published in four volumes, offers a dystopian story with intertextualitiesand elements of the Inca culture, as well as high doses of referentiality characterized by preceding manifestations of popular culture and science fiction. The edition that gathers the four volumes (2017) allows us to investigate how comics present, under Latin American lenses, issues that are linked to the confrontation between authoritarian and hegemonic discourses. A gender-wise review of the graphic novel can lead to a reflection on the representation of gender roles and the female body.
